Orson Welles once said that the reason for his confidence in directing Citizen Kane was “Ignorance…pure ignorance. There is no confidence to equal it. It’s only when you know something about a profession that you are timid or careful.” That’s been the story of my artistic career, for the most part.
That’s not to say I haven’t worked at honing my craft to the best of my ability. But I’ve never not thought I could branch out into the different facets of writing and music that I’ve worked with. I just stumbled headfirst into them, hitting each one with a whack-a-mole-sized hammer until I’ve been happy with what I’ve got, with the mindset of, ‘well gee, I might as well try.’
As long as I don’t know what I can’t do, then maybe I can keep on trying.
